SJ Fishing Report

Klamath: Trout fishing is fair. There are many small (half-pound) fish. An adult
fish is caught on occasion. Anglers use Stoneflies and eggs and are nymphing. The
river is flowing at 2,000 cfs. Jack Trout (530) 926-4540.
Lower Sacramento: The river flow was lowered from 14,000 cubic feet per second to
10,000, which has made a big difference for boaters trying to negotiate the
currents, hold at the edge of a current and fish properly. Anglers are nymphing deep
-- up to nine feet from an indicator -- and using two weights, along with Micro
Mayflies (size 18), Caddis Pupa (size 14) and egg patterns in light colors. Fishing
is good from the Posse Grounds down through the Sacramento River RV Park and to
Anderson Park. Jack Trout (530) 926-4540.
American: The river flow is lower and there is some decent late-season steelhead
trout action, though few anglers have been targeting steelhead the past few weeks.
Try using Caddis Pupa. San Jose Fly Shop (408) 448-5155.
Feather: The steelhead trout bite is nearly gone. Most anglers are more likely to
hook a spring-run salmon. San Jose Fly Shop (408) 448-5155.
Truckee: The snow has melted in the lower elevations and there is not as much
run-off. Use streamers and large beadhead nymphs. San Jose Fly Shop (408) 448-5155.
Davis: The boat dock at Honker Bay has been installed and access to the lake is now
good. The best fishing has been from shore and in shallow water. Dollard's Sierra
Market (530) 832-5251.
San Luis Reservoir/O'Neill Forebay: Anglers fishing from the bank have had better
results than boaters. On Sunday, one angler at the basalt area caught six fish about
18 to 25 inches long, keeping the big ones and releasing the smaller ones. He used
blood worms. Ly's Sporting & Fishing Goods (408) 629-9644.
McAlpine: A catfish derby is scheduled for Saturday from 6 p.m. to midnight. A load
of catfish weighing more than 10 pounds will be planted. A trout plant of 1,200
pounds is scheduled for Friday and fishing is excellent. (831) 623-4263.
ALAMEDA COUNTY
Trout plants: County lakes scheduled to be stocked with rainbow trout next week by
the East Bay Regional Park District include: Lake Del Valle near Livermore (1,250
pounds); Lake Chabot in Castro Valley (500); Shadow Cliffs Lake in Pleasanton (750);
Quarry Lakes (Horseshoe) in Fremont (1,000); and Contra Loma Reservoir near Antioch
(500). (510) 562-PARK or (925) 635-0135 ext. 2200.
SANTA CLARA COUNTY
Campbell Perc Ponds: Try using white Power Bait or black-and-yellow Panther Martins
for trout.
Lexington: The Department of Fish and Game is scheduled to stock trout next week in
this reservoir near Los Gatos.
Calero: Bass fishing is good as most lures such as spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and
plastic worms have been effective.
Chesbro and Uvas: Fishing for crappie and bass has been fair.
Anderson: Fishing for bass is good. Fishing for crappie is especially good, as some
anglers catch up to 20 fish per trip using crappie jigs or small minnows at the
south end of the reservoir.
Coyote: Trout fishing is good near the dam for those using Power Bait and gold
Kastmasters.
Coyote Discount Bait and Tackle (408) 463-0711, Reed's Sport Shop 926-3020, Ly's
Sporting & Fishing Goods 629-9644. Fly-fishing only: San Jose Fly Shop 448-5155.
Parkway: Limits of trout and a few catfish are caught. Sturgeon fishing is slow.
(408) 629-9111.

THATS A HECK OF A GOOD QUESTION. I HEADED DOWN THERE LAST YEAR AND THOUGHT I KNEW THE WAY. APPARENTLY THERE ARE TWO WAYS TO GET INTO THE FRONT AND THE REAR OF THE DAM AND I NEVER FOUND THE ROAD TO THE FRONT END AS TIME WAS SHORT. IT HAS BEEN MAYBE 50+ YEARS SINCE THE LAST TIME I FISHED COYOTE. GOOD LUCK.
CHUCK.

Welcome to the board Chuck! Hope you stick around. We could use some more experienced Northern California anglers here on the board.
