Basic Information on Fishing For Bluegill

Basic Information on Fishing for Bluegill
By Bryan Friedman

Several of the best fisherman in the world have one thing in common... they began by fishing for bluegill! Not only are bluegill fun to catch, but fishing for them is an excellent way to get a beginner hooked on fishing.

The great thing about fishing for bluegill is that they are generally easy to catch!

The following equipment, tips and basic techniques should be used to optimize your success rate while fishing for bluegill.

Fishing Pole:
Ultra light/light action
Rated 2-6 lb line

Fishing Line:

2-4 lb

Fishing Reel:
Designed to hold 2-6 lb line

Where To Fish:
ANY freshwater lake or pond
In bushes, weed beds, docks or any item providing structure for the fish.

When To Fish:
Early Morning

Fishing Baits:
Crickets
Mealworms
Red Worms
Wax Worms

Basic Fishing Techniques:

Fishing under a bobber
Place a small bobber a few feet above the hook. Length between the bobber and hook will be determined by the depth you are fishing. Cast out and wait for the Bobber to start dancing. Once the bobber is taken below the surface a fish is on!

Split Shotting
Place a small split shot approximately six inches to three feet above the hook. Cast out and wait for a bite or drop straight into a piece of structure.

Flylining
Tie the hook directly to your line and bait up. You are now ready to fish! No weight is needed with this technique. Drop into a piece of structure and wait for a bite.

Lacey,

Did you specifically want to fish blue gill in san jose? or just fish in general? I always get blue gill fishing at almaden lake down in south san jose off almaden. I use a small hook and a pinched off peice of a nightcrawler. Throw it in and usually in a minute or so you got a cute little blue gill on your line. fun! ahaha
