Central Coast Lake Reports 11/17/05
LAKE CHABOT, CASTRO VALLEY: The staff at Lake Chabot reported trout
fishing is great with many limits being caught. For trollers,
Kastmasters and Rapalas were the top lures. The best bait for fishing on
shore is PowerBait. Some of the best spots are near the marina, the
island and going toward Raccoon Point. Several bass were caught this
past week, including a 3-pounder by Danny Dominquez of Oakland. Try
Alder point or around the island for best results.
Just when catfish action was beginning to slow down, a 20-pounder was
caught on chicken liver in bass cove. Only a few catfish have been
caught the past few weeks.
LOS VAQUEROS, BRENTWOOD: The staff at Los Vaqueros said the a lot of
trout are being caught from the far side of the Rock Wall. Anglers are
finding success from just next to the wall and as far as 100 yards away.
Use nightcrawlers and marshmallows to help the crawlers float. PowerBait
works well here, as well in either rainbow or chartreuse. Also try the
ADA pier just on the other side of the Rock Wall. Use the same baits
here. Avery Hom of Concord caught a 2-pound trout from Oak Point on a
worm and marshmallow combination.
Trollers continue to have success on the eastern shoreline by using
Excel lures in trout colors, Kastmasters in blue and silver and
Needlefish in rainbow colors. Complementing these with flashers seems to
increase catch rates. In early foggy mornings, anglers have been
catching fish on the surface, but catches have been reported as deep as
35 feet, as well.
There are still a handful of bass being pulled out from the Rock Wall.
Nightcrawlers and liver are your best bet.
LAKE DEL VALLE, LIVERMORE: The staff at Lake Del Valle said with the
south end running between 2-8 feet deep, most of the trout have now made
their way into the narrows. Look for them around the islands, mostly on
the southern side. Try using white PowerBait or Power Eggs combined with
a nightcrawler. Anglers reported catching more fish, almost 2 to 1, when
their PowerBait was accompanied by a nightcrawler. Trolling has also
been producing fish, but mostly in the open waters near the dam. Try
using nightcrawlers and flashers at about 15 feet.
The bass bite continues to be strong. The fish seem to be on flats near
the islands, always on the side with access to deeper water. A few fish
have been reported with eggs, indicating a fall spawn. Try drifting
Senkos near the islands. Jigs and crankbaits are also doing very well.
Catfish are holding in channels in 30 feet of water. The bite has slowed
a bit, but limits are not out of the question. Pay close attention, as
you must let them take the bait. Fishing with an open bail is
recommended. Chicken liver is still the top bait, but anchovies,
sardines, and shad also will produce fish.
