Central Coast Lake Reports 11/10/05
THE LAKES
LAKE CHABOT, CASTRO VALLEY: The staff at Lake Chabot reported that many
anglers pulled out 1-4 pound trout fishing from the shore using
PowerBait. Trolling action was a little slow, but several anglers did
pull limits. Greg Arce of Union City caught 7.5-pound trout trolling a
Rapala.
Bass action is still a bit slow, but a lot of small ones have been
caught. Try Alder Point or around the island. John Clark caught a
2-pound bass trolling by Alder Point. Catfish action is beginning to
slow, with only a few being caught these past couple weeks. Tony
Schwarber landed a 17.4-pound catfish off the island using mackerel.
LOS VAQUEROS, BRENTWOOD: The staff at Los Vaqueros said trout anglers
should stay away from the South Cove for now. Despite plants, it doesn't
seem to be very productive. A lot of anglers have been hitting the rock
wall and having limited success. A few fish were caught at Oak Point.
Try fishing an inflated nightcrawler from the rock wall in combination
with a marshmallow or some PowerBait. For a sure catch, use needlefish
in a variety of colors including orange, silver or blue and work the
eastern shoreline. There are a lot of positive reports coming from the
buoy line and dead oak tree near the dam. If you fish on a calm, cloudy
day, you'll be in good shape. Fish the surface down to 10 feet as the
day gets warmer.
The bass bite has slowed down, with no confirmed reports this week of
any being caught. Some reports of salmon caught on Kastmasters were
noted, although details were slim.
LAKE DEL VALLE, LIVERMORE: The staff at Lake Del Valle said trolling for
trout has picked up. While bait anglers are getting most of the fish in
the south end and up into the narrows, trollers are having the best luck
in the open water near the dam. Broken back Rapalas and Rebels are
producing the most fish when trolled near the surface. Tim Browne of
Walnut Creek caught a 5.7-pound rainbow trout while trolling a
broken-back Rebel, brown trout pattern, near the damn. Bait fishing also
has improved, but most anglers are trading in their PowerBait for
nightcrawlers. Look for the trout to move into the narrows as the south
end gets shallower.
Anglers have reported a great bass bite. They seem to be stuffing
themselves for the winter. Use crank baits or jigs in about 15 feet of
water. Catfish are holding in channels in approximately 30 feet of
water. The bite has slowed a bit, but limits are not out of the
question. Pay close attention, as you must let them take the bait.
Fishing with an open bail is highly recommended. Chicken liver is still
the top bait, but anchovies, sardines and shad will also produce fish.
LAFAYETTE RESERVOIR, LAFAYETTE: The staff at Lafayette Reservoir said
trout fishing continues to be excellent. Anglers fishing the south end
of the reservoir by boat and using rainbow or chartreuse PowerBait are
going home with limits. Dock anglers are generally picking up one or two
nice-sized trout at various locations around the reservoir. Trout plants
continue every week through this month.
Even this late in the season, catfish and yellow perch still can be had.
Anglers are picking up yellow perch at just about any dock around the
reservoir with red-worms. The catfish are still biting on chicken livers
or nightcrawlers mainly in the east cove. This week, an angler caught an
11-pound trout off a dock near the dam using a worm.
