Give the DFG Input on where YOU want trout
I received this document from the DFG outlining a new initiative to allow recreational anglers to voice their opinion via 5 regional town hall meetings concerning where hatchery raised trout are most wanted and which types of trout are most desireable. Please read the attached document and take time, if you can, to attend these meetings and let them know what WE want. They are giving us an opportunity to tell them what we want. Let's take advantage of this.
In addition to the town hall meetings, they are giving the public until Aug 31, 2005 to email comments to director@dfg.ca.gov, submitting comments via the DFG Website, or by sending a letter to Director Broddrick.

I just sent this...
"Tim Alper has almost single handedly revitalized interest in fishing the Eastern Sierras, he has not done this with quanity but with quality. During our local trout season I see 60% of our stocked trout being eaten by cormorants, this issue would also be solved by stocking larger trout. People will be perfectly happy catching larger fish even if it means catching less, look at the numbers of people who pay to fish Laguna Niguel, Irvine, Green Valley etc., they would not do this for 1/2 fish."

Good point. I would definitely prefer fewer larger trout to many small trout. By the time the cormorants are done, the numbers would probably be somewhat similar anyway.
Come on guys, send in your opinions!

I have to agree with Russ. That's one easy way to cure the problem and make anglers more enthusiastic about supporting the stocking programs.

This is what I submitted...... (Feedback???):
Dear Director Broddrick,
I am an avid angler of over 20 yrs as well as a company owner/operator in the sport fishng industry. I am taking advantage of the oportunity that has been given to us(California Anglers); allowing us to voice our opinions regarding the stocking program.
First I would like to uphold the life long work and efforts of Mr.Tim Alpers in doing privately, what I believe the Department of Fish and Game could accomplish publicly on a statewide level. I uphold the DFG in all of its work and realize that public support is a big part of what the DFG's stocking program needs to be "fully" successful. I beleive heavily that by appeasing the "angler"; of whom is your target, and giving them more "choices" regarding the stocking program, you would greatly increase "willing public support" as opposed to the great percentage of current public support being implemented via mandatory fish and game license purchasing, etc.
Giving the California angler choices such as "where and when" certain species are placed/stocked and in what quantities, I believe that more anglers would be willing to privately contribute to the stocking programs on a financial level as well as in many other ways.
Also stocking less but larger fish as opposed to a higher quantity of smaller fish, would promote more non-DFG licensed state residence to purchase the required license; as well as, non-California residents to travel to California for an "angling experience" sure to land them "big fish", thus helping to ensure the sale of non-resident licenses also.
Taking the time to grow and stock larger fish would also help to curb environmental problems that affect the productivity of the California angler, such as the disruption of fishing due to the conflict that anglers face with the "Cormorant" species and their foraging for "small" stocked fish.
I am just the voice of one concerned yet supportive California resident angler, and hope that you will take the time to hear mine, as well as others opinions in how we as the California angling community can help as well as benefit more from the DFG's hatchery program.

Guys,
Got this email back from DFG Director Broddericks office after submitting my email previously:
Thank you for your correspondence regarding the Department of Fish and
Game's trout program. Your comments, and those of other Californians
who participated in our survey, will be carefully reviewed as the DFG
develops a framework for a more efficient, response hatchery system.
Additionally I invite you to attend one of four public meetings being
held throughout California this summer to solicit ideas on improving
our
trout program. Attached is an announcement of these meetings for your
reference, which can also be accessed through our website at
http://www.dfg.ca.gov/lands/fh/hatcheryplan.html.
L. Ryan Broddrick, Director
Department of Fish and Game
Has anyone else got this emailed back to them?

Oh it's definitely a Form letter, just curious if anyone else got it yet. Did you block your return address?
