Bishop area report for weekend of 06-24

WINDY!,WINDY!,WINDY!
After a late start and a stop for breakfast in Bishop my buddy and I arrived at Convict Lake Friday morning at around 8:30 A.M., we set up our pontoon boats and were fishing by 9:30. I was able to catch & release seven stockers on mini jigs and my buddy skunked before the wind came up and kicked our asses. I was lucky to make it back to the launch ramp alive and ended up soaked and minus some equipment that got washed off my cargo area by some big waves. We put away our boats and moved down to the creek to C&R fifteen or so each on eggs and worms.

Saturday we were still gun shy from the wind and decided to just hit Intake II since it is small and will be easy to get off of if we got wind again (we did).
We were on the lake by 8:00 and fishing was really slow, after playing around in the middle of the lake for an hour or so fighting a light wind I decided to park my pontoon on some reeds next to one of the creek inlets and relax for a while. I put salmon eggs on one rod and cast it into the current to let it drift out into the lake and started throwing a white jig with the other rod. I felt a fish pick up the jig and I set the hook into a 3lb Alper that was not easy to land using a 8'6 rod especially when my freakin net broke as soon as he was in it. After putting it on a stringer I decided to check my other rod and found that a 12 inch Brownbow hybrid had taken the eggs so it went on the stringer too. As I was setting up my bait stick for another throw I saw some movement around my jig that was just hanging a couple of feet below the surface while my rod was in the rod holder, I looked and saw another Alper rainbow that looked interested but didnt take it right away. I tossed the jig out just a few feet further and wham! FISH ON! my second Alper for the day, this one was a good half pound larger. I only got two more stockers after that (C&R) and my buddy got a nice 2lb Alper but we got chased off the lake by 11:30 by wind and clouds (cold!).
We headed over to try the South fork of Bishop creek and got into some stockers (about three each) before the rain started comming down so we headed down the hill. It was not raining a little down the hill so we stopped at Power station #2 below Big Trees camp ground and C&R several more stockers and I kept a really nice 13 inch Brown before heading back into town for a steak dinner at "Whisky Creek".

Sunday we packed up and headed back up to the South fork of Bishop creek to try some spots that the rain prevented the day before. We parked near the Creekside RV park and started working the creek through the campground to C&R several stockers even though the creek was moving really fast, at one of my favorate holes just below the "pond" I got another nice Alper (about 2 1/2lbs) out of the whitewater. Nothing is better than catching an Alper out of the creek below a 30 foot wide pond where several dozen guys are sitting around for hours soaking power bait hoping that one of the Alper's in there will feel like eating soon. Anyway we headed for home stopping at several roadside spots picking up a few more stockers along the way. It was a very short trip and a little disapointing numbers wise, the stupid wind made fishing the lakes almost impossible and the creek fishing was tough due to the high water level. I hope the weather is more cooperative when I go to Mammoth in August...

Thanks for the report! The wind makes it really hard to be out there on the water. I definitely feel your pain. Sorry you didn't get the numbers you're used to, but it sounds like you had a good trip.

Russ, What an awesome report. Man, reading this report really made me fiend for some Sierra action, seriously. Well written report. I got really jealous because

1. I love stopping to have breakfast in Bishop &...........
2. I love steak dinners at Whisky Creek.

I would have also went up to Mammoth and had a tasty steak dinner at the Chart House.

Sounds like a kick in the ###. I'm glad to read that you had some success at intake 2. I'm sure you had some fun there.

Its very fun, I have caught most of my Alpers over the years from the South Fork and its really exciting! This was not near my biggest fish but the heavy water flow made it feel like a 10 pounder.

No, I will get directions from you in a month or so when I am closer to going. If I get them now I will either forget them or loose them.
