Convict and Owen's
I was finally able to get away for a quick trip this weekend. Left the valley at 130 sat. morning and arrived at convict at 530. Started fishing right away by the rocks near the outlet. The fly and bubble combo was a bust for me, nothing, nothing. my fishing buddy showed up at 630 and told me the fishing had been ok all week and had turned off thurs. at about 10 am. We fished the whole lake and didn't get a bite.. No one had more then a couple of fish, all little dfg stockers. We finally gave up at 1030 and after having a bite to eat we drove over to the upper owen's and gave fly fishing a try..
That ended up being the ticket for the day. We fished a black wolly bugger with a prince nymph or a pheasant tail dropper. After three hours of fishing i had 12 rainbows and my buddy had over 25. He said it was one of his best days ever on the owen's. The fishing was great but the stream side was very marshy with lots of skitters, make sure if you fish the owen's to bring along some bug juice. Before we headed home sunday we gave the owen's another try and only caught 7 rainbows between us in two hours of fishing. called it a day and started the long ride home..It was something fishing the same runs and holes that had produced for us on sat and doing the same thing didn't work for us on sunday.
We had a great weekend just to bad convict was a bust and the mammoth area is still iced up.

Eric;
Were you tubing Convict? And am I to understand that you were there only for one night? I dont have that kind of will power, I dont think I could leave after only one night.

I brought my float tube just didn't think it was worth it to lauch it. Talked to a couple of guys float tubing and they said it was dead... Ran into the same guys sunday morning and they said they had seen some guys float tubing lower twin,very hard core. Sure wish it could have been a longer weekend for me but i just can't get away for then the weekend. And i need to fish so i am willing to do the drive by myself. Just hope my next trip in july will be at least a three dayer.. good luck in your upcoming trip

We fished the owens by benton crossing. I think that is about 25 miles north of bishop.

Eric,
I plan on being in the Mammoth area the weekend of August 12th, I have not yet decided on the exact departure and return days but I am looking at three nights and four days. I plan on tubing Sotcher, Mamie and George and spending at least one day hiking the San Juaquin between campgrounds, let me know if you can arrange to go up that weekend as I dont know if I can talk my brother in law into float tubing with me.
