Trip to Hawaii
I am back from a week long trip to Hawaii, a really beautiful place. I left for Maui last Saturday the 26th and was in town until the 5th. First impression when I got into the airport was "it is hot", and it was 10PM. I think it was in the upper 70's. Most of the airport that I saw didn't have any windows, mostly an outdoor airport which was pretty cool. I could clearly see all of the palm trees around. Never seen these fine trees before, very cool.
When we arrived at the house I saw a manson. It was huge, with a swimming pool and hot tub in the front surrounded by plants and trees and a gold course in the backyard. About a mile from the beach but clearly visible. The inside was huge. Very big house, and my brother and I ended up with the smallest bedroom in the house. Our family had the whole house to ourselves, no one else .
The next morning we spent a couple hours getting everything organized and planned everything we were going to do for the week and we were off. Down to Snorkel Bob's to get our gear. Then we headed down to the beach. On the way we stopped at a fruit stand and picked up some fresh fruit, very tastey. For some reason we went and snorkeled on the only beach that I saw shark warning signs. I did see one other later in the week by Hana, around the seven pools waterfall area. We snorkeled the rest of the day and headed back to the house to eat dinner. Right after dinner I went swimming(which a lot of people say not to, but nothing happend ) down in the pool and went in the hot tub. I can pass gas in there with no problem of bubbles showing...
Next was our first trip and that was down to Hana, they say it is supose to take arouns 3-4 hours because of the things you encounter on this road. Around 600 curves, around 50 one lane bridges and very narrow roads for two cars to fit on. This was all lush and vibrant jungle. Very green and really cool. Never seen anything like it before. We ate lunch in Hana at one of the beaches. I had alittle bit of time after eating so I decided to throw a line. I managed to get one bite in about 20 min of fishing then lost the clouser on the coral. We continued down the road to the Seven Pools waterfalls to swim and jump off it.
The next day we went up to the top of a mountain called Haleakala which was about 10,000 feet up. We got up around 4am and drove up to see the sunrise. It was the coldest I had ever been. It was around 20 degees but the windchill sucked bad. Never been that cold in Alaska or anywhere else.
Next was our 8 hour fishing trip which we also needed to get up at 4 for. We needed to be at the dock at 5am. We arrived to slip 35 to see Denny, Scott and the "Ho'okela". Very cool little boat! The first hour was totally dark as we went along through water with around 2000 Humpback whales in it. They are breeding right now and very active. Once it was light enough to fish, Scott setup the lines and we started trolling 6 different surface baits on casting setups. All top water. Within 45 minutes I saw the line move out a little, no one else noticed it so I told the captains helper(posisition name?) Scott and he handed my the rod and the fight was on. At first the fish ran for a few minutes straight at me, then he started to fight. Pump and reel...Pump and reel. Only took about 15 minutes and we had a 25lb 4' Striped Marlin on deck. Looked like this fish seriously has a fight with another. Really beat up. Once that was done we headed over to the bouys and everyone else caught some tuna. Very nice fighters no matter the size. Biggest caught was around 6lbs. 3 Yellowfin tuna and 1 skipjack.
On the way back to town we had some ahi ahi chasing our baits and teasing us but they wouldn't stay on the line. Three of them bit three of our lines at once but they dropped them. That was all for the day, very fun.
Next few days were snorkeling days and that was a lot of fun. Went on a rafting trip, big catamaran, and another ship. Down by the lava flows, in Turtle Town, Molokini. I saw a lot of fish, whales and turtles. We will see how the under water photos turn out.
We went to a luau one day, and that was a cool experience. The Old Lahaina Luau I think it was called. They cooked the pig under ground, and fed is some pretty weird but tastey stuff. The dancing was also fun to watch, they had a story going along with it.
Came back with a sunburn, some cool photos and a new species on the lifelist. Fun trip and hope to come back soon.

Geoff, It's really weird seeing you dressed in that type of tropical gear, not to mention no fly rod! Not used to seeing it. But, I'm glad you had a great time!! Great little Marlin...Congratualtions! I can't belive you had never seen a Palm Tree!!!!!!! Then again I keep fogetting you're not here in sunny southern California with most of us.
Speaking of using Crazy Charlies........Caledon Flies just sent me their new line of salties and one of the patterns is the most amazing "Crazy Charlie" you'll ever lay your eyes on, their quality and colors are impecable! Wish I could have sent you to Hawaii with a few. Glad you had fun.

By the way, the Seven Pools Water fall is where Hammerhead sharks go to breed. Only certain times of the year though.

Well the waterfalls are up further from the ocean but not by much. There is a stream that flows from the waterfall though. I saw shark signs...
