How do u tie a dropper loop rig?

Most people call this rig the dropper loop rig. How do i attach a section of line with a hook on it (the circled part) to the main line without using a barrel swivel? Many people tie on a dropper loop on their main line. If i do this, can i just tie on some leader with a clinch knot on it? Will this work? If anyone has any better rigging tips for me, please share them.

Usually i use this rig everywere, and seems to work best to catch bass, perch, surf species, sometimes bat rays and shovelnose and other fish. I usually use this on piers and in the surf. Thanks.

You could make a large dropper loop and cut one side next to the main line. Then tie your hook on the end of that.

If you have a leader with a loop on the end you could slip the two loops together (this is a very common method). Just make your dropper loop about 1 inch long.

One of these days I will meet up with you and show you. It is much easier to explain it in person

I will try to make it to LNL on Sunday.

I found this on the net. I have no idea how good it is but it has a free demo.

Thanks Lurch. Ever since i learned the rig, i have been using the teqnique that u explained on making the loop then cutting it. I just wanted to see if there was a more effective way than that. Thanks for your help.

The only reason I would use the loop method is for a quick hook change or when it gets tangled you could cut the hooks and save the main line.

It’s just more of a time saver. The down site to it is there are more knots which would mean more chances of your line breaking.

Alright what im thinking of doing is tying on 2 dropper loops, and cutting them, and attaching the hook like you said lurch. Then inbetween these two, im thinking about attaching another hook using a palomar knot. So there are 3 hooks total. Do you think this is a good setup for piers and the surf?

I’m not sure what you mean by using the Palomar for a third hook.
You could just make three dropper loops.

It should work fine off the pier or in the surf.

You're right Guest. When fishing for rockfish, only 2 hooks are allowed. I think DementedFish and CaptLurch were talking more about fishing off of the pier for perch when they were talking about 2+ hooks.

Actually, i was talking about fishing for rockfish, perch, bass, croaker etc. But now i know not to use 3 hooks! But this was the rig i tried to explain to u lurch. Do you think it would be better to attach it with a palomar knot, or attach it on a dropper loop?

I would just use another dropper loop just make sure they are far enough apart not to tangle.

If you are looking for a short one in the middle just cut the loop shorter. A Palomar pulled on both ends will probably break I have never tried it so I could not tell you for sure.
