New Hawaiian Sailfish IGFA fly tackle world record
Thought this might interest you guys:
Henry Potts is the only angler who's ever caught a blue marlin on fly in Hawaii waters according to IGFA rules. Now he's the only fly-fisherman ever to catch an IGFA-regulation sailfish here too. Potts hooked his historic sail on his boat Rod Bender with Capt. Chip Van Mols and mate John Bennett.
They raised the fish off Makua in 1,000 fathoms while trolling hookless teasers. It was 4:30 p.m., and the low angle of the light made the fish hard to see when it crashed the teasers. The sail followed the teasers right to the boat and jumped the fly, a 12-inch streamer pattern, without getting the hook, and then came back for a second take.
Potts fought it to the boat in about 15 minutes on a 20-pound tippet, Van Mols said, setting a mark that will be impossible to beat. After all, there is only one "first-ever."

kool story, i would expect sails to be more targeted by fly fisherman though. maybe its the hassle of the switch technique which is required, you would have to find a really hungry sail, i would think. do you know how long his search for a sail lasted?

actually sails take flies with the same enthusiasm that they do trolling lures; they are readily caught on fly. I think what the article was talking about is not that nobody at all; but no one else in Hawaii has every caught Sailfish or Marlin on flies via IGFA regulations, but that this guy is the only one who has successfully done it with all the proper IGFA regulations to obtain a record catch.
I don't know how long his search for a sail lasted, I don't even think he was targeting Sails purposely

It was on a top water bait, not sure exactly the name. There are photos in my report here:

I did get out fly fishing a couple times but only had one bite the whole time. Used Clousers, poppers, and a Crazy Charlie.

It's just a acrylic bullet head trolling skirt.
