They're centrifugal weights. The idea is that they will stay at the bottom of the rod they are fixed on until the spool starts turning fast, and that by sliding out they will help to control the speed at which the spool spins, adding casting control. The old shimanos only had two of them. Cuban Fish is right, don't lose them.
