Newell, Avet, or Shimano?
I'm going to buy a fairly small reel for fishing light tackle for yellowtail. I'm debating between the Newell 220, the Avet SX, and the Shimano Calcutta 400BSV (2005 model of the calcutta 400s). Im going to use 15lb test. Basically, I just want to know which reel you guys think is better quality and overall better reel. Also, Id be putting this on a Daiwa Heartland Salmon and Steelhead Casting rod. Here are the specs on the rod:
7'6 Conventional Rod
Line Rating: 10-25lb
Lure Weight 1/2oz-6oz.
Heavy Action
Here are the specs for the reels:
Newell 220:
13.3oz
5:1 Gear Ratio
20lb/200yds
2 Ball Bearings
Avet SX:
14.8oz
5.1:1 Gear Ratio
20lb - 220yd
16lb - 375yd
12lb - 450yd
6 Ball Bearings
Shimano Calcutta 400BSV:
11.9
5.0:1 Gear Ratio
12/330, 14/260, 20/160
3+1 Bearings

I used the Avet SX all last summer. Having never used a lever drag before, I can say that it was a pretty good reel. But a great reel for the money ($150). You can cast a mile with it, and the drag is smooth. Its tiny too. But I'll be putting the Avet on the shelf for a while. I recently bought a Saltiga 20, and I can't wait to get a sweet hookup. Also consider the Saltiga if you have some spare cash.

I would buy the saltiga, but i dont have the cash.
I'm leaning towards the avet. Its in my price range, its pretty, smooth, and ive heard some awesome things about it. The calcutta 400 is 200 bucks. So i dont want to spend that lol. As for the Newell, I dont like the whole graphite concept.

avet is a good all around reel same with newell these will both cast a mile but the newell will cast furter once you remove all the grease and lightly oil it and my newell 332 free spooles as long as my avet jx the one thing is that you have to break in the drags on the avets to get full drag and that is after you get a good 100 foot run or so. then another good reel for 15 pound line is penn 975ld they have a heavy spool so they dont cast the lite baits very well but cast the heavyer ones better but getting rid of the level wind will fix that

Thier all good reels, but dont throw newells out of the equation so fast they are great reels, its just that some people have bad experiences with them. they are the best reel for casting that i have ever had. i have caught yt and yft wit my 220 spooled with 15. As for the other reels i have heard great things of the avet and was thinking of getting one for my self.like fishinkid said the penn 975 is really good to but some are turned off because its heavy. thier all great reels, its up to you. i would get the avet but thats just because i already have a newell.
