(TDQ)Typical Dumb Question
I've fished all my life, but I've never had to change my lines myself (I'd have the store employee change it for me when I bought the line). That is until I ordered some fishing line, online. How do you tie the line to an empty reel? Would you guys recommend a palomar knot (Wouldn't that leave a small lump in the reel after you're done?)? thanx

i just use 2 granny knots. I figure it the fish gets all the way down there, then it wont really matter cuz the line is gunna break. I cant notice any of lumps in my spools after spinningmy own line on.

I use a sliding knot so it tightens itself as the line is pulled...

tell the employees to do it,no matter how good you get, they will always do a better job wrapping the line.

I use a san diego jam. If tied properly, the knot will cinch down as you apply more pressure, and it is supposed to hold 80-90% of the line strenght. Unfortunatley I can't seem to find the link that shows a diagram of how to tie the knot.

Thats not true dude, some of those employees are complete morons...I use a $10 Berkley spooling station for my baitcasting reels and I do my own spinning reels too.

Thanks for all the help. I think I'll use TunaKid's advise only because I don't know how to tie the other knots mentioned. Thanx.

The first couple of turns leave the line a little bit loose so it will grab the spool, otherwise it will just spin. Also make sure the line guide on the reel is even with your knot on the spool or it will not fill up evenly, all of your line will end up near the top or bottom and you will only be able to fit half as much on.

Also make sure that you put the line on the right way, especially with your spinners, if it is being put on the wrong way it can be a mess while you are fishing.
