Split shot on 2lb line?

Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep a splitshot from "crimping" my 2lb test line when I am fishing a trout worm or inflated nightcrawler and causing it to break on a big fish? I prefer not to have to use a sliding sinker rig if I can avoid it. What I am currently doing is placing a small piece of scotch tape on the line then pinching the splitshot on over the tape and trimming off the excess tape. The tape can be a pain to wrap around the wet 2lb especially when my hands are dirty...

They dont cast as far or sink as fast, I am thinking of snipping off small pieces of a coffie stir straw and sliding that up the line before tying on the hook, then pinching the split shot over the straw piece.

IVe never had a problem with big fish breaking off at the split shot. You can also setup a sliding sinker rig that weighs just as much as a split shot. I have some I can show you. Using a small barrel swivel it would work exactly the same.

Hey fishslayer you want to go with us to SARL friday?

Most sliding sinkers are to heavy for my uses, the few small ones I have seen are very cheap and have too many sharp edges. I dont want to use a swivel because then I am tying three knots instead of one.

Well, you can either do it right or not do it at all lol You worry about cutting the line, but you wont tie another knot?

Its about trying not to weaken the line more than I have to, every knot tied is just one more place the line has been weakend. When I am fishing 2lb line for fish that may go 5-10 pounds I want to give myself the best chance of landing them that I can. I allready have a weight system that I use that does not weaken the line at all, I am just looking for posible alternatives or improvments. You have a system that you have confedence in and that works for you, but that does not mean its the only system or best system to use. By looking for new learning oportunities or making my own when necessary I hope to develop new techniques that will help me become a more successful angler.

Instead of tying 3 knots, you can still tie one knot and use a sliding sinker. Use a carolina keeper and slide that up after the weight. You can change the length of the leader simply by using your pliers and sliding the keeper higher/lower depending on what you need.

Yes, I have and use Carolina Keepers on occasion but I still have not found a small enough sliding sinker to use. The best results I have had while fishing trout worms so far is with a split shot or a twist on sinker about two feet above the hook dragged accross the bottom. I get hit with a sliding sinker but they dont take it, I do have some really small worm or bullet weights that I want to try but I need to clean them up first. They all have sharp edges on them because they were really cheaply made.

They have that soft weight that you can mold on to your line. I can't remember what it's called though. I don't think it will sink as quickly as a split shot though.

Sticky weight? I think...I keep playing with those aluminum cable stops too but they just dont cast very far.
