South Jetty - Channel Islands Harbor 2/21/04

I met up with a couple fishin buddies and we fished the end of the south jetty in channel islands harbor for a few hours this morning. I showed up about 8:30 and started fishing a whole squid on my big pole for batrays and rigged the other up with a single strip of squid.

My first hit of the day was a really nice 13 inch rockfish! This guy was pretty fat and put up a nice fight on my light gear. We aren't really sure what kind of rockfish it was and the inside of it's mouth was blue which was cool.

My next hit was a calico that went about 11 or 12 inches. It was a lot skinnier than the rockfish, but still fought pretty good.

We were fishing near the kelp and I got tangled and broke off on my third fish. I lost everything and had to re-rig my pole. About 15 minutes later I get snagged again and as I go to break it off, I feel it break loose so I reel it in and my line is tangled in someone elses line. My buddies reel in and it's neither of them so I figure I caught someones old line. Nope. It was mine! I pulled line up out of the water and there was my weight, carolina keeper, and hook with a fish on it!!! The fish was a small rockfish (about 4 inches). So that was cool. I got to recover some of my lost tackle.

That was pretty much it for the good hits. The rest of the fish were all small and I don't think any of them were over 5 or 6 inches. I caught 3 total. I'm not sure how many my buddies caught. I guess they had some hook ups before I got there too.

By about 12:30 the wind started really blowing, it started raining harder, and the fish stopped biting so we called it a day. I had fun and I'll be out there again soon. I'll have pictures next time if it isn't raining again.

well at least you got in some fish before the rain came in. Sounds like you had a pretty nice time.
