Boat Fishing Pointers

I want to try to fish freshwater on boats. I dont know anything about boating though. Any Help.
Like what speed for trolling? What lures to troll? how do you get the lightweight lures down to the desired depth when trolling?

Also, say the lake site online says there is a particular hot spot on shore. If on a boat to i fish around that part but just a little farther out from shore? If not what do i look for environment-wise to troll around.

Srry for all the questions

Hey tchli, I think I can help you out a little. For trolling speed, it really depends on what the fish want. Generally, I like to try trolling slow first and then change speeds if nothing happens. On rental boats, I generally troll with the motor in gear and not giving it any gas. This will normally give you a slow enough speed to start with.

Lures I like to use for trolling for trout are Rapalas (CD3 and 5) and Yo Zuri Pins Minnows (these work really well for me!), Kastmasters, Thomas Bouyants, and pretty much any other lure that you like to use for trout from the shore.

If the fish are deep and you need to get a light lure down to them, you can use leadcore line. The leadcore line will sink the lure to the desired depth. If the fish are shallow, you can fish the lures on straight mono so they stay near the surface.

As far as where to fish on the lake, your best bet is to check the reports and hit the spots that have been producing. If you can't seem to find fish, you can troll around until you find where they are. If you use a fish finder you'll be able to also target a specific depth where you mark more fish. If you know of a spot that's working from the shore you can just try and troll through the area. Just make sure to stay far enough away from the shore anglers and in enough water that your lure doesn't get stuck on things.

I hope this helps!

always use a ball bearing swivel a anywhere from one to three feet above your lure, this will dramaticly reduce line twist. and mira shads are good too.

Can i just put a one ounce sinker or less and troll a bit faster so it will stay higher? Is leadcore line the only way to go? Right now the lake says that the trout are hitting the trolling lures from surface to 12 feet down.

Thanks

just troll with mono, if they are that shallow, you can try the egg sinker think but it will twist your line a lot...

If you are trolling with a sinking crankbait with a medium - deep diving lip on it, you could probably fish down 12 feet with no weight pretty easily. You can add weight above the swivel to get other lures down a little deeper, but leadcore will be much more effective and easier to judge the depth of your lure. It would also be a lot easier to put your lure back at the same depth after you catch a fish since you can just put out the same number of colors you had before.

One ounce is way to large, but what you can do is use a texas rig type of slider, I forgot their exact name but its not the barrel swivel it is the pointed kind. As long as the pointed end is pointing towards your rod you can do it that way.

Be careful with how far back your stringer of fish goes. If you are careless about this you can lose all or some of your fish to the outboard.
