Making your own equipment

Besides tying flies does anyone make their own equipment, I have been making my own trout jigs for over a year now and reciently I have been making my own rod holders. Some are designed to go on my belt so I dont have to put my rod down while unhooking a fish or tying on a new hook or lure, the others are for shore fishing or on a boat. Tuesday I found a metal spike made for holding Tikki torches at Walmart for $2 bucks, it works fine by itself as a rod holder but I took it home I added a two foot piece of PVC pipe to it so I dont have to bend over as far to check my drag or tighten up some slack line. I have also taken heavy guage PVC and after cutting it into three or four foot sections I cut one end at an angle to make a quick easy sand spike. 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch aluminum electrical conduit can be easily cut as well and its pretty easy to attach foot long pieces of PVC to one end of it and to sharpen the other end for a tougher ground spike.

I made four more rod holders today, I attached a elbow joint to a two foot section of the black PVC, then I attached a spike to the bottom of the PVC. It cost me less than $5 bucks per rod holder and they are pretty much universal. Right after making these ones I saw a heavy guage wire sign holder for 99 cents that allready had two "loops" bent into it a little bigger around than a rod butt. I added three more bends to the wire and "viola"...trout rod holder for less than a dollar. I think I am going to start carrying a couple extra ones to sell at the local lakes, I will only charge them $3 bucks a piece.
