Calico on a party boat

Jumped on the pursuit on a 3/4 day to Catalina,
the overnight boat, the freedom did not go out,
not enough people, soooo
the pursuit got loaded with desperate fisherman

most of the morning was spend bottom fishing
some nice salmon grouper were loaded, using anchovies
and 8 oz sinkers
we were very close to the yellowtail and white sea bass spot,
but we were bottom fishing deeper, go figure
I just went with the flow and squeezed in to fish
and got a call for my breakfast burrito while people were getting
some decent ones, it happens all the time, when the bite is on,
your food is ready and they keep on calling you..
fishtacooo your burrito is ready..dam Danny

Anyways, after 10 am we went to the front of the island
and stopped at a yellowtail boil, impossible to cast an iron
with all the people running around to tackle boxes and bait

I driffted a squid and later a sardine but it was ignored
they (yellowtail) were gone as fast as they showed up

the boat then stopped at a kelp paddy
and bonitas were everywhere, i landed a few
and some big but macarels on a crokodrile spoon
and a plastic grubb, they take anchovies also,
no pics cuz i only had my cell phone
no worth it, and my hands were coated with slime

decided to cast to the kelp
with all this people, the only way was
the all mighty calstar 800 xl
on a newell 229 with p-line 20

way out there, the sardine almost disappeared in the air
shortcasting guys with avets were looking, taking notes..

calico after calico, almost at every cast
released quick, to fight another day

then we saw yellowtal swim under the boat
wtf! Everybody scrambled around again

but they are not ready yet, I may go next Monday
o Tuesday if nothing else is happening.

Nice report, i need to head out there and get a yellowtail. I already have the cooking plans sketched out. GOing to grill some, sashimi a little and ceviche the rest. Oh yeah, it's going to be a 30lb yellowtail too

Them Yellowtail are outhere, and lots of them
but they must be spawning
going wild, chasing the female yellowtail
so the best way must be bottom fishing
and they are not boat shy, so a dropper loop may work

yes dodo the mighty Calstar 800 xl, since it's long
allowed me to cast long, but the best part was that
you can get the calicos out of the paddies faster
almost skipping on top of the paddies
I was raising the rod high while cranking the newell
That gives a angle to make them skipp most paddies
cool, old school is the best school,
but we old dudes need a nap after fishing,
and the pursuit provides some nice bunk beds
for the ride back

Good work out there Eddie. Sounds like a blast. Thanks for feeding the yellows & making sure they're well fed for when I get a chance to hit the island.

Good luck on your next trip!

nice job. I like the pursuit but haven't rode it in a year or so because that boat is always crowded

Nice report Eddie,

Best of all guys take note of his equiptment selection. The 8' 15-25 class rod with the Newell 229 is one of the if not the best live bait combo you can own. Do not mess around when looking for a live bait set up for inside of 2 days. Just copy the FishTaco Man and you will not go wrong. The two reasons why his set up is ideal. 1 The rod is long, use at least an 8' to 8' 6" med action 15-25lb rated. Do not use the fast action heavy sticks. The lenght aliows you to really pitch that sardine the max distance. And 2 use a reel with a light spool. The Newell 229 with the 20lb P-Line is perfect, it has the light Graphite spool allowing you to cast the lighter baits a long ways. The combination is deadly. That is why the Avets or any other aluminum spooled reel will never be able to compete with the 229, their aluminum spools are just too heavy. The aluminum spool "KILLS" casting distance for the lighter baits. Remember the reel is the key, any rod in the required length and weight class will do. There is a scientific reasons why that combination is so efficient but the explaination would hog the board. And do not think his rig is too light for serious fishing. Anything under 35 lbs would be fair game.

Good fishing out there. Those breakfast burritos are good, but checkered burritos are better. I hear the cook knows how to make some bomb bonito, by the way...
