Ideal Combo
Pardon the rookie question but I need the advice. Just boat a 24' aluminum pilot house boat to get back into salt water fishing. Used to fish every weekend as a kid. All the gear and technology has changed, plus my budget is larger for gear than when I was a kid. I need to out fit with new rods and reals. There are three of us fishing primarily on my boat. I want rods and reals that are versitle but good equipment.
I mainly will be fishing for Halibut and Rock cod and salmon when back. I will eventually do tuna but can get seperate equipment.
I have been looking at Gloomis, Cal Star, lamaglass and others. Reels mainly Shimano's. Can anyone offer advice on the best combo for the three of us and where the best place to purchase is.
Thanks for any input.

for tunas , ranging from 20 to 80 lbs ID GO WITH A 765XL CALSTAR STRAPPED ON A 2 SPEEDER 665 ACURATE.
for halibuts , 8ft 800l calstar with a 535 gs for plastics.
rock cods a firm rod like a 700m or h with a large capacity reel, say like a 4/0 penn.

for surface fishing, casting on boils during the summer

a 8 ft minimum 20-40 rod, Calstar, seeker, pro sabre, Avet,
the avet rod is nice and loads nicely,
this is the most versatile set up.
For botom fishing and heavy fish,
any metal reel
accurate boss, avet jx, with any rod in 6'6 to 7 ft
loaded with braided line and top shot of seaguar fluorocarbon
For calicos and sheep'shead n stuff a baitcaster abu inshore
w p-line 15,to cast the plastics, heavy 7ft rod by Gary gloommis
For trolling
a 4/0 penn, 30 international is a cool one to have
unless you thinking marlin then a international 50
to a 70 for big butt tuna, momoi line hi visibility, pakula skirts
witch doctor teaser...
need a deckhand? just let us know
any of these guys can do and be glad to fish with you.

Here is probably an unpopular choice but the GLoomis BBR964C with a Shimano Calcutta 400 for halibut, shallow rockfish and salmon (though i havent really fished for salmon). The rod has a soft action which will help keep you from ripping the hooks out of the soft halibut and salmon mouths. The Calcutta 400 is a nice versatile reel that can handle small fish all the way up to some larger ones like 10 to 15 pound yellowtails. It has a bait clicker which comes in useful. Lots of line capacity when fishing straight spectra. A Sealine 20 would be a cheaper alternative to the calcutta.
For loaner rods you can do Shimano Terramars and Daiwa Sealines. That way, if someone breaks the rod, it's no big deal since shimano replaces them no questions asked.

For throwing iron an AVET 2 speed. I also like a 2 speed for rockfishing, especially lings and occasional dropper loop yellowtails. You could put spectra for rockfishing, then save it on a spool for later while you put 30# IzorXXX in smoke to toss iron.
For top water I like 12# line. I use it for calico and barracuda (use a circle hook). That reel I would use a REVO Inshore. With 24#'s of drag that's a lot of versatility, even enough for a yellowtail. Plus, it comes with a power assist handle for shallow water rockfishing. That could come in handy for sheephead. I've even used it for sandbass. Overall, you can go from the top of the watercolumn and get calico bass, then go to the bottom for YT, with drag enough for both.
As far as rods go.....Since you bought a boat are planning on spending some serious $$$$ on rods and reels I'd really go custom. On your order you might get a price deal depending on quantity.
If not custom, then I'd go Phenix rods. Just a SIK look on their rods using some of the best rod components. Amazing blanks are used. If not them, then Setyr has saltwater rods.
