Central Cali Lings are Monsters!!!!!

Just picked this up with permission from Sin Coast on a Central California fishing site. Can't wait for the Monterey move, Wohooo!!!!!

Forgot the dudes name but he was stoked about the opener too. There were a bunch of kayakers out today: 8 NCKAers and 4/5 others. Only a few boats outside the pinnacles.

The fishing was kind of slow. Most people only got a few here and there; no schooling blues, olives, etc. I usually catch 25+ at that spot. But the average was only 2 or 3 per boat this opening day.

My final tally was 4 blues, 1 olive, 1 verm, and 4 lings. All lings were over 26 inches. The two I kept were 28 and 35 inches. The big guy was an awesome fight. I really thought it was a monster halibut because it just bulldogged at the bottom. I almost crapped my wetsuit when I finally saw it coming up with its mouth wide-open, flared gills, and big teeth--I was stradling my yak at the time but quickly put my foot back in the boat LOL!
My custom made gaff worked flawlessly.

All of my lings and the red were caught on the exact same lure: 6" green scampi on a 3oz leadhead. With a chunk of squid, of course.

Afterwards, a group of us BBQd on the beach and enjoyed the day. I had a lot of fun. The BBQ was epic. We had chicken, sausages, and really fresh fish tacos.

Ling 1.

Ling 2.

Stupid otters.

Saw these guys too. They were pretty cool, and even helped me put my fish in the tankwell in the back.

Ling 4. Too big for the hawg trough.

Bloodbath.

Happy angler.

Stupid lingcod.

Kept one of these little guys too.

Stupid fillet knife.

BBQ time

Awesome fish tacos. Right off the grille.

Wow that looks actually really fun. Go out on a kayak, kill some fish, then grill them right there on the beach. I would also love to fish a weedless jig in that kelp for some bass.

Unfortunetly, no bass make it up there. Looks like I'll have to settle with the 10 million pound lings instead........"boooooody hooo hooo"

I am pretty sure that that 'Ling" that was Blue is what they call a Cabizon...right?

I believe a Cabazon is more like a sculpin family of rock fish.
