So jon and I left for Lake Mead Friday after work for some fishing.
Saturday morning we headed off to Overtun and launched our kayaks next to a bass boat that was fishing in the Won tourney. They managed to catch a fish as we were unloading and once they were out of our way, we launched and headed out to find some bass. the middle of the cove had a few scattered boils and we started trolling through there as we were looking for a suitable point or stretch of shoreline to fish. Almost right off the bat, i caught a striper on my Pixy with 6lb line, with a Medium Light, Moderate action Kistler Helium LTA and a Megabass X-80 in stardust shad. After bringing him in, and some assistance from Jon, we start trolling again and Jon manages to catch one on a Lucky Craft Staysee. At this point, it is clear that the bite will only be on trolled baits since the boils we were casting to whenever they happened to be within casting distance of our kayaks werent resulting in fish. i let out a second rod with a Pointer 78sp in Chartreuse shad and we started trolling again. shortly afterwards, i hook up on another fish and jon starts heading towards me to help me out. on his way over, he gets bit too. DOUBLE HOOKUP! this went on for about 10 fish and would have kept going strong if the wind didnt pick up.once the wind came up, we left to grab some lunch, clean some fish, take a nap, look at some domesticated carp and striper etc...
after coming back to Overtun towards the evening, we fished from shore a little until the wind died down. during that time, jon got a largemouth on a spinnerbait and i got two more largemouths on a 1/4oz watermelon colored football jig from Kietech (Rubber Jig Model II) with a Watermelon P.P. colored Keitech 4" Live Impact as a trailer. by this time the wind had died down and we took out our kayaks again. i continued to fish the jig for a little bit until i realized how difficult it is to fish a jig from a kayak. so i switch to two Chartreuse Shad Colored Lucky Craft Pointers, one in the 78sp and the other a 100sp and trolled around looking for some active fish. these fish were few and far between though and by the time the sun was going down, we switched to the topwater baits and started fishing coves filled with shad. the stripers, however, just werent there... i was using the Lucky Craft Sammy 128 in the Ghost Lake Mead color while Jon was throwing a Rio Rico popper in clear. the fish werent too interested but i did get bit twice, once when had my head turned away to tell jon something and the other time from the launch ramp right after the first zig of the zig zagging motion the sammy has. i missed both.
Sunday morning we went back out to the same spot but the wind was BLOWING. we never took the kayaks out of the trucks and decided to grab some breakfast and head home. after, breakfast, we took a LOVELY 12 hour car ride to Newbury Park then from there to the valley.
overall it was a fun trip. jon will probobly upload the pics later on but i'll put some pictures of baits we were using to add some color to the report.
