Catalina Island Kayaking Feb 29 - Mar 1
It looks like we're going to be planning a weekend trip out to Catalina to do some kayak fishing. The plan is to head out on the night of Feb 29, fish Saturday Mar 1, fish half day on Sunday Mar 2, and then return home Sunday afternoon.
We're thinking of camping at the Two Harbors campground which is right on the water so launching the yaks would be easy.
Round trip tickets on the Marina Del Rey Catalina Flyer cost $75 per person plus $30 for a kayak. Camping on Catalina costs $12 per person per night. So, the weekend is looking to cost around $149 per person.
Anyway, I'm going to be working out the details and adding more info, but let me know if you'd like to join us!
Here's who we have so far -

Wow, this looks like it would be an epic trip for sure. Are there any size limitations for kayaks? Does the Flyer disembark at Two harbors or do you have to paddle over with your gear?

Yeah, the Catalina Flyer goes to Two Harbors for sure and I believe the Catalina Express does too. I didn't see any size limitations for kayaks. The Marina Del Rey Flyer just charges a flat $30 for a kayak. We haven't figured out all the details yet, but I believe there is a tram from where you get off the boat to the campground. So no paddling to the camp.
You interested?

hmmm this looks like fun, not sure if my yak can handle open ocean water though. Bays, harbors, and lakes it's great but ocean maybe be a bit much.
I am interested in going but have to see if my yak is suitable for this first.
Also how does the catalina trip work, do we just leave our cars in a parking lot or get a ride to the ship from a friend. guessing also we would need kayak carts or dollys to move our yaks once we are on land?

from what little I know of Catalina its very much like fishing a harbor or bay, it gets a strong current sometimes but not a lot of chop.

THERES A PICK UP TRUCK ( for a fee ) WILL TAKE YOU TO ANY LOCATION IN TWO HARBOR.
I CAMPED OUT THERE FOR 7 DAYS, GREAT CALICO SPOTS NEAR THE ROCKS.
I DONT KNOW IF THEY DO HAVE CARTS OR DOLLY, BUT YOU CAN ASK THE SCOOBA DIVING PLACE THATS ON THE DOCK.

Have you guys contacted our member fishncatalina yet? Maybe you guys could hook up and fish with him out there. I'm sure he'd know some spots, since he lives there.

A Perception Swifty... here is a link with the specs. It was my first kayak buy so I kept it low budget to see if I was going to stick with it. So far the thing has been the best $275 I have spent. I also might go look at a Cobra Explorer tomorrow after work.

Sean maybe you could rent one when we get to the island, might work out to be just a little more than the cost to bring your own.
