Anyone want to hit up Santa Ynez River next week?

O.k guys I just bought my setup. It's not the best, but hey it works. So now I am ready I hope to try this out. I purchased a 2 piece scientific angler pole
8'6 5-6 wt and a basic reel with line and backing. Now I need to learn how to set it up and I was hoping one of you might be able to help I just got back from visiting a friend in santa barbara headed up to redrock and the waters flowin There were about 6 fly fishers catchin fish and havin a blast. Does anyone wanna go up there next week with me? I will drive.... I have never been fly fishing before and this would be my first time. When I went today it was awesome the trout were rising and there was alot of action for them stocking last week. What flies should I buy? Wheres the best place to get them cheap? Let me know if you wanna go.... I am thinkin Mon or Tues of next week in the early am.

setup, the flyline and backingare already attached and spooled?
of so, great... then you will be needed a loop to loop or a butt section (20# mono or 15-20# ambrosia) nail knot that to your leading edge of the fly line, and your just about ready...add a taper / tipet and go fish

Man is it worth the drive. It is stocked with stockers, but the view is unimaginable. Wild deer and turkeys everywhere in the middle of a valley. Bishop is close as far as scenery but redrock is way better. As far as fishing honestly never been. When I was up there people were catching them and like I said they are stockers which makes for a fun day. It's 20min from solvang. I have never fly fished but am willing to drive from yucaipa to there happliy They are suppose to get snow from this new storm which means water flow should be even better.....

Let me know..

i live in the area and its a little longer than a fifteen minute drive, more like 45. They did get snow there. I have friends that live down in that valley. as it is the water was really mudy before today. The good news is that he caught a trout in the mud last week with some "cheese bait" right below the forest service district office. This is probobly because the creek crosses the road near there like 3 times, which is where they plant.

Hey, just an FYI: If you put on one of those "Chinese Finger cuff" braided loop connectors, I currently ditch the tube that they give you and use two nail knots, one half-way down the braid, and the other, at the end of the braid, closest to the reel...tie that knot long enough to cover the frayed ends...you have to kinda work at the knot loops to get them to tighten properly if you use the regular nail knot.

The rubber tube they give you to secure the braided loop prevents you from cinching the end of the fly line tight up against the start of the loop, and it holds great if there's a fish pulling on your tippet, but if the tube brushes up against something (like someone grabbing it to test the strength instead of grabbing the loop itself), the whole assembly comes off your fly line. I've had it happen twice, luckily not with fish: once when a friend was "testing" the loop, and another, when it was being dragged across an obstruction on the bottom.

You can put some flex-coat on the nail knot...it's easier to tie the knot with larger pound test line, but it sticks out less if you use 4 pound mono.
