pier fishing

how do you bring fish up from piers? i lost a couple of good sized calicos and it pissed me off. i was using 12 lb line( pretty damn heavy IMO) and 6lb leaders.

i was thinking of a hook or something that will act as a gaff and then just pull it up.

or should i tire the fish to death (literally) then haul it up?

should get yourself a hoopnet works good for landing smaller fish.

hoop net or a pier gaff ( big weighted treble hook with about 50-100 feet of rope)

what pier do you go to and what did you use? i should be so lucky to get something other than mack or bone! i would think that 12/6 test would be good enough, they must have been pretty big.
