Fly rod???

I want to get a fly rod for fishing nymphs on LNL this up coming season, I dont want to spent a lot of money and I will only use it a couple of times a year I think. What length should I get and what "weight" should I get. I picked up a few at sportmart the other day and they were all #5 weights, most were 9 foot long and had really light action.

Think Irvine not LNL this upcoming season lol What you picked up sounds right, just remember to match the type of line to the rod, the taper to the water you are fishing and the leader to the fly.

Who does what now? Why cant I just tie on seven feet of 2lb as a leader? (And yes I do plan on hitting "The Vine" a few times as well)

I would get a 3 weight - just because I really like fishing with light tackle. Also, a majority of the trout you will catch will be great on a 3 weight and will probably give you a nice fight. If you are lucky enough to hook into something big, it will require more skill to land (and a little luck). I personally think it's more fun that way!

P.S. Let me know if you find a good deal. I was just talking to Sean about this a couple days ago when we found out LNL is still having a trout season. I need a rod!

Yeah I dont plan on using it much anywhere else but when I do find myself near a lake or stream that has regulations on fly fishing only I would like to be able to fish it. I really want to hit LNL float tube derby this year and try it with a fly rod. Fishing a dryfly with a bubble is OK but I found its a bit trickier to fish a nimph with a bubble, I kept missing the strikes.

If you were to get just one flyrod for trout, I would suggest a 9 ft 5wt. A 3 wt would be a great 2nd rod, but most 3 wts are either 7 or 7.5 ft long, and in my opinion, too short to CAST from a float tube. Remember, you're sitting down in the water, that extra 1.5-2 ft of rod will help you're distance a lot. You do need a tapered leader. The leaders are a larger diameter at the butt, tapering to a fine tip section. Then you tie a 2-3 foot section of "tippet" to the leader so thet when you change flies, you'rte not shortening the leader itself. This helps the fly "turn over" at the end of the cast. Remember, you are casting the weight of the LINE, not the wieght of the FLY. If you just tied on a 2lb section of mono, the fly (and mono) would mostly land in a big pile right at the end of your flyline. Check out the Cabella's flyrod selection. They have some good quality "budget" rods. You can get comlete, decent quality setups-rod, reel, line, leader- for under a hundred bucks. Good luck, Matt

Hey fishslayer, im planning on doing ALOT of fly fishing this year at LNL, so if you need any tips, just ask. I have a GLoomis 4wt passage rod, but its probably out of your price range. I would suggest getting a 4wt, because you are going to be fishing midges. Yes you can use regular 2 lb leader, but I would suggest using tippet. All you want to do is attach about a 10 ft leader directly to your flyline, and a strike indicator on your tippet. You do not use tapered leader. This season, i will be using a 12 ft leader with a wooly bugger on the bottom. I will put a midge 1 ft above that, and then one for every 2 or 3 feet.

We definetly need to meet up there this year. Do you have a float tube?

How the hell do you land a freakin fish with that much leader? when you reel it in and the flyline gets to the top of the rod doesnt it fall through and pull your leader with it?

When you have a fish, you dont reel in. You set the hook with your fly line, not your rod. Thats y the moment you see a hit, you need to set the hook. im gonna use that long of a leader cause im gonna drift my flies.

I would suggest a 9' 5 weight also, anything lower then that in weight is going to start getting pretty spendy. I enjoy using a 5 weight and use it on a lot of different species of fish. I like have a 9' rod because it helps me cast and gives me better control of my mending and where I want the fly to go. Redington makes great flyrods for fairly cheap. I got a Redington Redfly Series for about 100$ I think it was or a little cheaper. Great rod! For reels I would probably be looking and okuma or scientific anglers. They have some good reels that are not very much money also. I have heard a lot of good stuff on both those companies when it comes to reels. You could get a pretty good outfit with those 2 things.

Hope I was a little help atleast...

I know how to set the hook, but how do you land the fish when the leader is ten freakin feet long? how do you reach the fish to remove the hook? When your flyline falls through the guides on a 9 foot rod how are you supposed to re-thread it while on a float tube?

I just reel in the leader enough to grab the fish or strip in enough line to get the fish. Then once the fish is release I grab part of my line and pull it back out. Holding the handle end in my right hand, then I just grab some line and pull it out so its not in the guides anymore. Then start casting again...

I have a feeling that flyfishing is a pain in the ###...maybe I will keep working on some of my other tricks instead.

When I rig a wooly bugger all I do is this:

Have my leader, then tippet. Then tie on the fly, very easy. For nymphs I usually rig up the same way except I put on a strike indicator most of the time now. Is that what you were asking? I can post some pictures later, class is getting ready to end.
