Hummmm, inquiring minds.....
CST: I started out using a spring scale with the tattle tail and it worked just fine, that method will give you accurate readings. However,,, when you are testing 30lb test that breaks at 50 lb when that line breaks ther is one heck of slamming recoil in that scale. I did that about three times and my wife asked of I was shooting skeet in the loft. The spring scale is certainly usable but for me the non-recoil of a digital scale provides a much smoother response to the breaking of the knot or line. And after you test a couple hundred knots that feature is appreciated. And using a spring scale to test line and knots is also a thousand times better then no test at all. Its just a matter of preference and available tools at hand.
Beresford: Tie it to a desk an pull hard.......OK,, now how many pounds of tension did the knot-line break at. The information obtained is subjective. You need verifiable data to ascertain usefulness. But that method of test can be of value if used to test 2 knots simultaneously. By that I mean take one pc. of mono and tie a hook to one end and on the other end tie another knot to a different hook. Secure one hook to the "Desk" and pull to destruction. One knot will break leaving one intact. You can keep doing this type of knot elimination and it will not be long before you have found a good usable knot.
