spectra/braid maintance

hello everyone. have you smelled your spectra latley.
does it smell bad, if so , its time to do the service. start off by removing the line ( spectra/braid ) from reel by using another empty spool ( fishing line spool works great ). once the reel spool is empty, just simply dump into a big bowl of water. grab a wet clothe, remove excessive salt off the reel spool.
secret, use a light coat of wax to ( chapstix ) coat the reel spool. this will help eliminate spool corrosions ( seen a 600.00 reel spool corroded badly , because of the spectra bieng on the reel to long with out service ).
the rest is easy, simply wrap the wet clothe around the spectra when respooling, squeeze with fingers gently to remove water off spectra as your respooling.

little extra work goes a long way. for those who uses spectra , find the coated type ( spectra ) it will help eliminate salt absorbant into spectra.

wet lines, dry lines, tight lines everyone.
any help needed , just p.m. me , will be more than gladly to help.

Thanks for the info!

Now here's a noob question for ya...what's the difference between "Spectra" and "Braid?" Is it the coating?

the powerpro ( green box ) have better casting.

Braid just means it is a braided filament of some kind. Spectra is one of those filaments used to make braided line.

OK Tim the Toolman, let's try again. LOL jk
Spectra is a fiber that some braids are made from. Just like wool is a fiber that some threads(the sewing kind) are made from. Not all braid is spectra, just as not all threads are wool. That any better?

That makes much more sense. Just don't ask me to explain it back cuz I'll copy & paste. Thanks for the layman's explanation.

took another look at the product, they are very simular.
what mobassman says makes sense, different fiber material.
i paid less for the braid, about 15.00 dollars cheaper than spectra.
remember dacron.

cool, on to the next subject.

if you spray wd40 on your finished rod , will it cloud up the finish work ?

i have a custom rod thats about 6 years , and after fishing with it , i rinse and wash with soap and water, then i spray wd40 all over the guides and blank.
we,ll i noticed the other day , took it out in the sun , the flexcoat( what ever it called) that is used to finish the rod, looked really cloudy.

i have the rod at whopperstopper (the original builder).
he says nothing can be done , would be cheaper to build another one, than stripping the original.
