AVET SX

SO, I finally recieved my AVET SX 5.3:1 !! I've been wanting one for awhile and after much debate and wrangling if I really needed it, I got it! Intial impression is it's small. About the size of my Shimano Cardiff 300 but definatley heavier but for good reason. This reel is made to slay!! Corny, sorry!!
The reel is designed for the following mono capacities: 12lb 460yds, 16lb 375 yds and 20lb 200 yds. I'll be spooling it with 50 or 65 lb spectra. 65 if I intend to use it primarily for tossing irons, if not 50lb. The SX will be mounted to an 8ft MH Shimano Teramar. I typically fish rods in the 7' to 7'6" in range.
The reel is very well made. The machineing quality is excellent and the reel free spools forever!! Unreal how long that thing spins!! There's not very many parts to this reel, 62 to be exact, as I hate working on reels that have a bunch of tiny pieces!!
So far, I like the way it looks and how well it's made and the free spool to boggles the mind!! Hopefully I get to use it this weekend and find out how well it handles the fish(if I catch one). The hype around this reel is unsurpassed. So far so good. Fishing it will tell the whole truth!!

Looking forward to the review after you've used it. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Yes, that little reel is a power house for its size. You may find that the free spool is too good. You may not think that is possible, but take your 8' Teramar and attache a 4oz iron and try and power cast it. You will soon see what I mean. You will have to introduce a lot of friction in the cast control to reduce the over spooling. The high friction setting reduces distance. As a remedy you may want to consider this:

If you have any questions, fire away.

As always my suggestion, for your consideration.

I've heard about magging. The newer 5.3:1 SX is supposed to resolve the over spin. My thumb is functional!!

That's awesome! Glad you like it! I'm thinking about doing a 3/4 at Newport this weekend. Let me know if you want to head out there to try out your reel!

Just put a 12# top shot on it and try it on stripers in the duct Saturday.

Great little reel. I know when i bought mine the first thing I thought is its so small im going to break it. Freespool on those is incredible. My first cast with it was...well lets just say it was pretty ugly.

The thing I hate about Avet the most is their quality control. There are no two reels that are the same.

Agree. That was one reason I waited to get the reel. I was going to get it few weeks back, but through the grapevine, I heard of a recall and held off untill now. So far it looks good!! They do have a reputation of having excellent customer service so we'll see.

One tackle store owner would not sell AVETs to new anglers, too fast of a reel. My first casting practice was like being pulled by a bull, spool just screamed by. What a bird's nest!!! I'm ok with 'em now, but like to practice cast before I go out.
