Can it be fixed? Yes, but is it worth the cost?

I believe I've seen the Calypso you're talking about in a combo for $110. I've seen the rod and similiar rods for $40 at a tackle store too.

Rod repair is about $7-12 per guide based on where you go and type of guides. I don't know about handle cost. I'm not too sure. I've never had a handle repair, customized yes, but not replaced.

Also, since it has a few scratches, how bad are the scratches? Could the blank be damaged as a result.

Overall, how much do you trust the rod? If it was treated bad; missing handle, missing guides, and scratches, then was it neglected to the point where it would fail?

I really think that you should consider rod repair as a hobby. You've come across quite a few rods in need of repair.

If you've got free time in your hands, hit up a local shop and befriend them and/or offer to be their unpaid intern. Call it an investment. That is, if you're truly devoted to learning the trait.

Good luck!

Flexi-Coat has an amazing $5 book that covers a lot of really important information. You can look for it at acidrod.com

PM Walt too, he makes rods and could give some info.

Honestly about the handle depending on the shape it's in I'd probably remove the middle and make it a split grip, clean up the bits, and thread over what's left. If we gather at WALT's maybe you can bring the rod and he can do a demo.

Weird enough I customize fishing rods but I only "paint" rods, and don't own any thread.

On the handle of the rod there is a piece of foam, empty space, then another piece on the bottom. The area where you grip the rod is split. I find it more sensitive and lighter.

Look for WALT in the Saltwater Report Section. He's nice and could help.

Dry wall screen can also be used to shape foam, it's in hardware stores. Rod repair just might be your new hobby

If you are going to shape foam or cork grips you will really need a lathe to give you the high revolutions to get an even and smooth shape to the grip. If the butt is big enough, you could shave off the foam and cork tape and shrink wrap.

If you really like the action of the rod, it is worth saving, but if it's just ok, then it's time to move on and go tackle shopping. You don't have to toss the old one. Practice on repairing it and it may become your favorite.

Lovefish,
I have the Flex Kote rod building and repair book mentioned by BeachBear above. If you would like it, get me your address and I will mail it to you, a freeebie.

If you want, post some pix of the damaged section and we can offer some repair suggestions. The cork wrap with the shrink tubing suggestion from Portbowrules above is a great, doable idea. You are capable of doing this , you just have to go for it.
