kid's fishing, ano nuevo - 8/13/07

8/13/07, santa cruz to ano, live bait, my kid, her buddy and my wife's brother in law, 3 limits of nice rockfish, including a stringer of 8 beautiful vermillions, 3 lings, very fast drift, left both engines in idle reverse so slow us down, worked great! go get 'em!!!!!

great fishing alan, would you happen to know if you were fishing close to the island of ano nuevo where the former lighthouse was? I love that area. It's likely you were by there since there's so much congestion of sea lions.

yes, there used to be a lighthouse on the main island. we would set up our drift northeast of the main island and let the wind just blow us in. it was a pretty brisk 10-15 knots and made for a very erratic drift. you can see a few small whitecaps in the background. we started in 90 feet of water and drifted into 50 feet and would hook up no matter which direction we went. nice fishing for a change. alan

Thumbs up

Very nice!!! Were all the Reds that size?

Everytime I've fished up (Farrallons) there the rockfishing was incredible, but only saw one red caught. Are they fairly common or is it a hit or miss type of deal?

Also, how was the bait? Big BIG chovies?

Your reports are some of the best I read on the web. Thanks.

Nice report Alan, best of all I like the fact that your girls are using conventional reels. You have brought them up right. LOL

the anchovies are only 3 inches, but they work just fine. the vermillions are inshore, or at least that's the only place i've ever seen them. when the screens lights up with fish, it's usually schooly black, blues, etc., and you'll never find larger fish in the mix. these vermillions and lings are solitary. they don't play well with others.
