As long as you can on a certain day if possible. I've caught fish when it was supposedly the wrong time of day to catch them but I'm stubborn like that lol. High tide is a really good time, and don't feel you have to cast out 100 feet from the pier. When I pier fish I cast 10 feet or straight drop most of the time.
